Individual Counselling

BCS Logo V Small

Counselling provides a safe environment where someone can come and be heard, and where the emphasis is on enabling people to make changes to their lives which they feel would be of benefit. The aim is to help the client achieve a better quality of life for themselves.

The counsellor and client work together to do this, exploring issues and what may be the underlying cause, and so gaining a deeper understanding and greater self-awareness.

Individual counselling takes place on a 50 minute session per week basis for as long as the client and the counsellor together think is beneficial. The majority of our counselling is provided in this way, often over a period of several months.

How much does it cost?

There is a fee of £40 for the initial consultation appointment. For ongoing counselling sessions we ask for a donation of between £15 and £50, which is dependent upon your financial circumstances and will be discussed and agreed when counselling commences.

Your weekly session time will be held only for you throughout the duration of your counselling. In light of this, your agreed donation will normally be payable whether or not you are able to attend.

We rely on the donations we receive from clients to cover our running costs of providing a high quality, professional service.  We try to raise funds by applying for grants, but we have no direct regular source of funding from outside agencies.

Our counsellors give their time on a voluntary basis, and we are also fortunate to have volunteers who undertake clerical and administrative tasks.

Please note that we can only accept donations by cash and cheque (except for the consultation appointment, see below); at present we are unable to process credit cards.

How do I apply for Individual Counselling?

Call us on 01256 843125 or email us at

We will then send you an information pack which includes a client questionnaire and tickbox form which we ask you to complete and return to us with the £40 for your initial consultation appointment.

The £40 payment for the initial consultation can be paid by cash, cheque or bank transfer. Cheques should be made payable to Basingstoke and District Counselling Service. Our bank details are:

Sort Code: 40-52-40                         Account No. 00017311
Held at: CAF Bank Ltd, 25 Kings Hill Avenue, Kings Hill, West Malling, Kent, ME19 4JQ

Unfortunately we are unable to accept bank transfers as payment for ongoing sessions.

Once you have returned your completed forms and donation, we will be in touch to arrange your initial consultation appointment. (If for any reason it seems at this stage that counselling with us may not be appropriate, we will contact you to discuss your application.)

The Initial Consultation

This appointment is an initial exploration of your reasons for seeking counselling at this time and to get a brief history from you. It lasts for up to an hour and a half.

This is an important part of the process, so that we can ensure that the counselling we offer is the best way forward for you, and if so, for us to be able to allocate the most appropriate counsellor to work with you.

It is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about counselling or the Service.

After your Initial Consultation

If it is agreed that counselling with us is suitable for you, we carefully select a counsellor to support you who

  • is trained to listen and understand
  • will meet you once each week for a 50 minute session
  • will help you find your own answers.

All sessions take place at Basingstoke Counselling Service, Goldings, London Road, Basingstoke RG21 4AN.  For clients who are unable to use stairs we can offer an appropriate alternative venue.
