Individual Counselling

BCS Logo V Small

Counselling provides a safe environment where someone can come and be heard, and where the emphasis is on enabling people to make changes to their lives which they feel would be of benefit. The aim is to help the client achieve a better quality of life for themselves.

The counsellor and client work together to do this, exploring issues and what may be the underlying cause, and so gaining a deeper understanding and greater self-awareness.

Individual counselling takes place on a 50 minute session per week basis for as long as the client and the counsellor together think is beneficial. The majority of our counselling is provided in this way, often over a period of several months.

How much does it cost?

There is a fee of £50 for the initial consultation appointment, if this fee is prohibitive please note this on question 13 when completing the Client Information Form. For ongoing counselling sessions we ask for a donation of between £15 and £50, which is dependent upon your financial circumstances and will be discussed and agreed when counselling commences.

Your weekly session time will be held only for you throughout the duration of your counselling. In light of this, your agreed donation will normally be payable whether or not you are able to attend.

We rely on the donations we receive from clients to cover our running costs of providing a high quality, professional service.  We try to raise funds by applying for grants, but we have no direct regular source of funding from outside agencies.

Our counsellors give their time on a voluntary basis, and we are also fortunate to have volunteers who undertake clerical and administrative tasks.

If you are currently in receipt of benefits, you may be eligible for 16 free counselling sessions via our Assistance Fund. For more information, click here.

Our  latest response to Covid-19:

The majority of our initial consultation appointments are taking place via Zoom and telephone. We have some limited availability for in-person initial consultation appointments.

As we transition back to our offices, some of our ongoing sessions are taking place in-person and others are taking place via Zoom or telephone. Please do let us know your preferences when you apply.

Even when we have fully returned to our offices, we will continue to offer sessions via Zoom and telephone for initial consultations and counselling sessions to new and existing clients.

How do I apply for Individual Counselling?

→ Client Information Form

Once we have received your completed forms and payment, we will be in touch to arrange your initial consultation appointment. (If for any reason it seems at this stage that counselling with us may not be appropriate, we will contact you to discuss your application.)

If you would like more information first please use the form on the Contact Us page or Email Us

The Initial Consultation

This appointment is an initial exploration of your reasons for seeking counselling at this time and to get a brief history from you. It lasts for up to an hour and a half.

This is an important part of the process, so that we can ensure that the counselling we offer is the best way forward for you, and if so, for us to be able to allocate the most appropriate counsellor to work with you.

It is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about counselling or the Service.

After your Initial Consultation

If it is agreed that counselling with us is suitable for you, we carefully select a counsellor to support you who

  • is trained to listen and understand
  • will meet you once each week for a 50 minute session
  • will help you find your own answers.

How to pay for your sessions

There are two methods of payment available, PayPal and bank transfer.  If you do have a PayPal account, we would appreciate it you could pay using this method otherwise bank transfer is fine. For further details on payment please click here.

If you are unable to make payment in this way please discuss this with your counsellor.

Normally all sessions take place at Basingstoke Counselling Service, Goldings, London Road, Basingstoke RG21 4AN.  However currently sessions can also take place by phone or by Zoom.  Zoom is a secure video link which can be used on a smart phone, tablet or laptop.  At the time of booking your session we will ask you what your preference is.
